The Descent of Alette ["I stood waiting"]
By Alice Notley

“I stood waiting” “for some minutes” “in this very” “alive darkness—”"the air so vibrant,” “the trees awake” “There were flowers,” “mixed grasses,” “growing lower” “in the dark,” “& I was relieved” “to be near them” “after so much time” “where nothing grew” “Then” “I heard a

song” “faint & blurred,” “a slow song” “I heard it” “as if through walls” “As if” “there were a room” “next to where I stood” “& someone,” “a man,” “sang inside of it” “The tune was sad,” “& attracting” “I approached it—” “where its source seemed to be—” “& it moved away

from me” “just a” “short distance” “This happened twice” “Then I
understood” “I was to follow it:” “& so it led me—” “through deep woods” “& clearings,” “for” “a long while” “The voice sang” “the same melody” “over” “& over” “mournful” “& intimate” “in a language”

“I didn’t recognize—” “or didn’t think I did:” “it was hard to” “hear the words—” “Till at last we” “reached a meadow” “where the song” “ceased to sound,” “pale & empty” “with trees around it” “Then I sank to” “the ground” “& fell asleep for” “a long time” “But when I

awoke” “of course” “it was dark”

Spring Views

Friday, April 30th, 2010

This Vermont April has seen the most significant ever recorded snow fall this late in the season. 12- 14 inches fell and it stayed around for three days. It was strange and beautiful, and luckily it didn’t seem to disrupt the flowers and trees already in bloom.

Three days later, the tulips showed no sign of having had just been buried in snow!

April 2010 Resident: Richard Nielsen

Thursday, April 29th, 2010
Richard Nielsen, artist from Los Angeles, made a film animation from his VSC residency in the printmaking studios this April.  He says: “The obsessive odyssey of Ahab’s search for the great white whale in Herman Melville’s, Moby Dick is not unlike the single mindedness of a printmaker’s quest to ‘pull’ the perfect print. During my residency at VSC, I created a sequence from the continuous reworking of a portrait of Ahab, and turned it into the first short chapter of an animated film.  I executed the portrait in dry point and then through a variety of mono printing techniques, created a series of animation cells, which I photographed and edited together (see below).  The long-term goal is to produce 135, 5-minute chapter films illustrating this American classic.”

Alumni News

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has named Jill Downen, VSC Alumna of Spring 2009, among its Fellows for 2010.  The 180 fellows were selected from about 3,000 applicants representing artists, scientists, and scholars in the United States and Canada.  “Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of impressive achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment.”  (The New York Times Friday April 16, 2010, A5).  Downen’s project, as described in the recent St. Louis Beacon article, will involve research between St. Louis and New York and culminate in the exhibition of a new site-specific installation.
